- • Peripheral neuropathy is not necessarily permanent — nerve fibers can regenerate when the right inputs are present.
- • Acupuncture has randomized-trial support for diabetic peripheral neuropathy, with symptom improvement often visible within 6–10 sessions.

Why 'nerve damage is permanent' isn't the whole story
Peripheral nerves regenerate roughly 1 mm per day when the environment supports repair — adequate blood flow, controlled inflammation, and neurotrophic signaling. Gabapentin and pregabalin blunt the pain signal but do nothing to change that environment.
Acupuncture's effect on neuropathy is measurable: it increases local microcirculation, modulates inflammatory cytokines, and upregulates nerve growth factor (NGF) in the treated dermatomes. That's why patients often report sensation returning gradually, session by session, rather than a single dramatic change.
What the evidence says
Dimitrova 2017 (JAMA Internal Medicine) meta-analyzed 15 RCTs of acupuncture for peripheral neuropathy and found significant improvement across diabetic, idiopathic, and Bell's-palsy neuropathies. NCCIH lists acupuncture as a recognized option for chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) as well.
What to expect at our Clearwater clinic
Most neuropathy patients need 8–12 sessions to see durable change. Sessions run 45–60 minutes and combine acupuncture at classical points, electro-acupuncture along the affected dermatomes, and — when appropriate — ATP Resonance BioTherapy™ for microcirculation support.
Frequently asked
Can acupuncture reverse peripheral neuropathy?+
Acupuncture can meaningfully improve peripheral neuropathy symptoms in many patients — reducing burning, tingling, and numbness — and in some cases restore sensation. It is most effective when combined with tight glucose control (for diabetic neuropathy) or when initiated within the first 6–12 months of symptom onset.
How many acupuncture sessions do I need for neuropathy?+
Most neuropathy patients at Acupuncture of West Florida see meaningful change within 8–12 sessions over 6–10 weeks. Chronic or long-standing neuropathy typically requires an extended protocol; Dr. Kim provides an honest session estimate at your free consult.
Do you take insurance for neuropathy acupuncture in Florida?+
We don't take insurance — we're a self-pay practice. We provide a superbill after your visit that some insurance providers will accept for out-of-network reimbursement, and HSA/FSA cards are accepted.
