Dry Needling vs Acupuncture in Clearwater, FL

Different training. Different scope. Honest answers from a Florida-licensed Acupuncture Physician.

Clearwater, FL clinicCertified Neuropuncturist® · Certified SAAT Provider★ 5.0 · 79 Google reviews

Dry needling and acupuncture both use solid filiform needles, but the comparison ends there. The two modalities have dramatically different training requirements, different clinical philosophies, and different scopes of practice.

In Florida, a Licensed Acupuncture Physician (AP) completes 2,700+ hours of accredited graduate-level training in needling, point selection, biomedical safety, herbal medicine, and integrative diagnosis. A chiropractor or physical therapist offering 'dry needling' in Florida typically completes a 40–50 hour weekend continuing-education course.

Dry needling is generally restricted to trigger-point release for musculoskeletal pain. A Florida-licensed acupuncturist can address musculoskeletal pain, but also treats nervous-system, immune, fertility, cancer-related, and internal-medicine conditions backed by published research.

Questions

Frequently asked

Is dry needling just acupuncture under a different name?+

Functionally, the same hair-thin filiform needle is used. Legally and clinically, it is a different scope. A Florida AP completes ~50x the training hours required for a PT/chiropractor's dry-needling certification.

Why does training time matter if it's just a needle?+

Because patient safety, point selection, and clinical reasoning matter. Pneumothorax (collapsed lung) from improper needling near the chest is a real adverse event tracked in the literature. Training depth is the primary safeguard.
