- • Acupuncture is an ASCO and NCCN-endorsed supportive therapy for chemotherapy-induced nausea, CIPN, hot flashes, and cancer-related fatigue.
- • It is not a cancer treatment — it is added on top of your oncology plan, coordinated with your Moffitt, AdventHealth, BayCare, or Florida Cancer Specialists team.
- • Most patients start seeing symptom relief in 3–4 sessions, timed around infusions.
Which side effects respond best
The strongest evidence base is for chemo-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), chemo-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), aromatase-inhibitor joint pain, hot flashes, and cancer-related fatigue.
Bao 2020 (JAMA Oncology) showed acupuncture significantly reduces CIPN. Molassiotis 2012 established acupuncture as an NCCN Category 1 intervention for cancer-related fatigue. Garland 2019 (JNCI) demonstrated durable insomnia improvement in cancer survivors.
How treatment fits around chemo
For CINV, we typically treat 24 hours before infusion and again 48–72 hours after. For CIPN, weekly sessions during and immediately after chemo produce the best outcomes. All plans are coordinated with your oncology team.
Frequently asked
Is acupuncture safe during chemotherapy?+
Yes — acupuncture is safe during active chemotherapy for the vast majority of patients. We use single-use sterile needles, avoid the lymphedema-risk arm after node dissection, and coordinate timing around your infusion schedule and platelet counts.
Which chemo side effects does acupuncture help most?+
Acupuncture has the strongest evidence for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV), chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), cancer-related fatigue, hot flashes from aromatase inhibitors, and treatment-related insomnia.
Do I need my oncologist's permission?+
You do not need permission but we strongly prefer to coordinate. Dr. Kim shares a treatment note with your oncology team at Moffitt, AdventHealth, BayCare, or Florida Cancer Specialists on request.
